Disposing of Non core assets is a quaint way of saying that we strategically screwed up. A number of firms today are executing a strategy of disposing of “non-core assets”. This is due to one of two reasons. Either we have shifted strategy and now certain asset are not needed for its execution or We took our eye off the core business while we diversified too wildly. If the latter it means that We acquired businesses that we never should have. We just did not have the bandwidth, intellect or expertise to manage different businesses. Our enthusiasm exceeded our competence. Our reach exceeded our grasp. These statements should come with an apology to investors. And a penalty for the incompetent.
Irrational diversification is a big problem
