Hybrid tech is often a natural way station on the journey to the digital future. Often it’s in the form of incremental upgrades or add ons. This is the only option in tech where failure has huge consequences, like transportation. Each component needs to be solidly stress tested in the field before the next. Which is why Apollo 11 landed on the moon and not Apollo 1. Or why Space x had dozens of launches before finally getting ready for the first manned mission probably on May 7 2020 on Dragon 2. We only gradually transitioned from a three man cockpit to auto pilot , instrument landing , fly by wire, elimination of flight engineer, automated take off or landing and soon a fully automated aircraft We will similarly see AI assisted driving long before we see self driving vehicles. And why we will see automated taxis before automated cars. Taxis are often regionally bound and are a smaller use case. similarly we will see AI assisted ships before fully automated ones So don’t knock incremental innovation. It’s alternative could be horrific.
