A strategic leader has to have 20/20 vision in three areas to be successful. This is true in business as much as it is in politics.
The first is to learn from the past. Hindsight. History does have a habit of repeating itself. Mainly because the dynamics of an industry don’t change.
The second is to learn from the present. Insight. The ability to extract key facts and trends from events today and to better appreciate the strategic levers available and their efficacy. Data analytics are playing a massive role in this area as they drive out informed tactics.
The final one is to be able to envision a future state. Foresight. This is a creative and divergent process of assessing where an industry or country is heading too. Too often leaders stumble into strategic craters that were apparent with foresight. Also foresight allows one to get ahead of the game proactively rather than reactively.
