If you are an innovator or an early adopter then you are prone to technology triggers and peaks of inflated expectations. The Gartner hype cycle and the product adoption curve are totally aligned. The Key message is that hypes are driven by innovators and early adopters. I still have a Sony betaMax and a creative mpeg player and a Microsoft itune somewhere. We aggregate dead products at the trough or chasm. The leading edge is often the bleeding edge. Having bragging rights can be expensive. But industries are built or broken by these segments. Today you call them influencers!
